AUTHORS: Don Bonnette*, Michigan Department of Natural Resources

ABSTRACT: The application of prescribed fire is a common grassland management tool used by wildlife habitat managers wherever natural or planted grasses and grassland dependent wildlife occur. This presentation will discuss the planning, application and fire effects of prescribed fire to manage ring-necked pheasant habitat at the Verona State Game Area in Huron County, MI. Wildlife friendly firing techniques and post-fire habitat treatments will also be discussed. The Verona SGA is a 7,449 acre State Game Area located in Huron County in the “Thumb” region of central lower Michigan. Much of this state game area is managed specifically for ringed-necked pheasants to provide secure year-round habitat including wintering, nesting and brood rearing habitat.
