ABSTRACT: In some systems, including central Lake Erie, yellow perch Perca flavescens have demonstrated specialized foraging behavior in the presence of hypolimnetic hypoxia, during which they dive into the hypoxic zone to forage on benthic prey. We investigated whether this behavior is an inherent response of yellow perch to hypoxia by conducting three laboratory experiments on two strains of yellow perch. The first experiment investigated whether yellow perch were willing to leave a normoxic environment to feed in hypoxic waters. The second assessed the effects of acute hypoxia exposure on yellow perch hemoglobin concentration and expression of genes that mediate the physiological response to hypoxia (e.g., hif-1α). The third investigated the effects of chronic hypoxia exposure on yellow perch consumption, growth, hemoglobin concentrations, and gene expression. Results demonstrate that, although there are differences between strains in foraging behavior, hemoglobin concentration, and the expression of some genes, these differences appear unrelated to hypoxia exposure. Yellow perch may be generally tolerant to hypoxic conditions, potentially providing them with a competitive advantage in utilizing resources within and outside of hypoxic zones.
