AUTHORS: Jeremiah Heise*, Michigan DNR; Ryan Wheeler, Michigan DNR

ABSTRACT: Part 2: CASE-STUDY: The Saginaw Bay Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (SB-CISMA) recently formed to address invasive species within the largest watershed in Michigan. Michigan’s DNR Wildlife Division owns and operates several state game areas in the Saginaw Bay, many that are managed intensively for waterfowl. Phragmites has devastated the habitat in coastal areas of Saginaw Bay, especially with historical lower water levels and exposed bottomlands. Controlling Phragmites and other invasive species has been one of the habitat goals for the game areas. By partnering with the SB-CISMA, state game area managers have been able to increase the capacity to reduce the impact of Phragmites on habitat and coastal wetlands.
